The Outer Worlds

4 Years in the making…

October 2019: the sci-fi action adventure RPG, The Outer Worlds was released and a secret my good friend, Lee, and I were finally able to talk about!

When I started at Good Game in 2016, we were covering a story about GX Australia, the first queer and inclusive convention of its kind. Wanting to be more involved with the gaming industry, I decided to drag Lee along with me with the premise of meeting the people behind some of the greatest RPGs, Fallout, Fallout: New Vegas, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, etc. After checking out some panels and indie games, we saw Tim Cain walking by himself through the hallway. We introduced ourselves to him and from there, began a great friendship.

A few days after the convention, Tim came to the Good Game office to be interviewed. He told me he was deeply inspired by Lee’s story and history with their connection to the Fallout games. These conversations spurred him to make one more big game before he would retire and that game became The Outer Worlds.

After keeping correspondence for many years, Lee and I decided we would make a trip to California to see our good friend Tim, and Obsidian Entertainment. We also met co-creator, Leonard Boyarsky, who told us the story of how Comdt. Sanita and Pvt. Lee Flores came to be. Tim had said in a meeting he wanted two NPCs with the name Sanita and Lee. During development, there was a character named Pvt. Flores and an unnamed NPC next to them, so it was only natural to add Sanita next to Lee. To be forever immortalised in a video game with one of my best friends is more than I can ask for and I’m grateful to Tim and Leon and the team at Obsidian Entertainment!

It’s not the best choice, it’s Spacer’s Choice!
